چکیده

A simplified model problem is used to illustrate some of the parameters controlling the radiation of sound into an ambient medium due to the growth and subsequent decay of subsonic travelling waves, such as may occur via non-linear interactions in turbulent free shear flows. It is shown that substantial sound may be generated by apparently subsonic modes as a result of their growth and decay characteristics. Low frequency modes that saturate over a short timescale are the most effective radiators. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Casson Fluid Flow with Variable Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity along Exponentially Stretching Sheet Embedded in a Thermally Stratified Medium with Exponentially Heat Generation

The motion of temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity of steady incompressible laminar free convective (MHD) non-Newtonian Casson fluid flow over an exponentially stretching surface embedded in a thermally stratified medium are investigated. It is assumed that natural convection is induced by buoyancy and exponentially decaying internal heat generation across the space. The dim...

Traveling Waves for Monomer Chains with Pre-compression

In the present work, we complement our earlier study on the subject of granular crystals in the purely nonlinear limit (no precompression) by considering the case where an underlying linear limit exists (finite precompression). In the latter context, we explicitly prove the existence of supersonic traveling waves, which are smooth, positive and exponentially localized. While numerical computati...

The survival of interstellar clouds against Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities

We consider the stability of clouds surrounded by a hotter confining medium with respect to which they are in motion, against Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities (KHI). In the presence of cooling, sound waves are damped by dissipation. Whenever cooling times are shorter than sound crossing times, as they are in the normal interstellar medium, this implies that the instability generated at the interf...

Electromagnetic wave propagation in media with indefinite permittivity and permeability tensors.

We study the behavior of wave propagation in materials for which not all of the principal elements of the permeability and permittivity tensors have the same sign. We find that a wide variety of effects can be realized in such media, including negative refraction, near-field focusing, and high impedance surface reflection. In particular, a bilayer of these materials can transfer a field distrib...

Modulated exponential films generated by surface acoustic waves and their role in liquid wicking and aerosolization at a pinned drop.

The exponentially decaying acoustic pressure of scattered surface acoustic waves (SAWs) at the contact line of a liquid film pinned to filter paper is shown to sustain a high curvature conic tip with micron-sized modulations whose dimension grows exponentially from the tip. The large negative capillary pressure in the film, necessary for offsetting the large positive acoustic pressure at the co...
